Elon Musk’s X Suffers Widespread Outage

It’s not just you. Elon Musk’s social media platform X is currently suffering outages in a variety of locations across the globe.

Reports submitted to DownDetector show tens of thousands of people have struggled to load X, with particular hotspots in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta. The problems seem to have started around 10 a.m. ET and are ongoing at the time of this writing.

DownDetector also shows that people are having difficulty with xAI’s chatbot Grok, though there seem to be fewer reports of problems there. Grok was at the center of a controversy in recent weeks after users started making non-consensual sexualized imagery of women and girls. Some countries, including Malaysia and Indonesia, have banned Grok outright over the issue, and several countries have launched investigations.

Attorneys General in California and Arizona have also reportedly launched investigations into Grok. The company has limited use of the tool, and posters on r/Grok have complained this week that they can no longer make NSFW material like they could before.

X didn’t respond to questions emailed on Friday, though that’s nothing new. Musk despises the news media and used to have an auto-responder that just sent a poop emoji to all questions from journalists. We didn’t get a poop emoji, but his company, xAI, still does something similar, sending the phrase “Legacy Media Lies” automatically to all reporter questions.

Gizmodo will update this article on the off chance we hear back from X.
