Weekend snow becoming less likely for Charlotte Metro: Here’s why

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – It was becoming less likely that Charlotte would see any snow this weekend, though the possibility still existed, as of Friday.

At least one forecast model was predicting this week that the Charlotte Metro could see snow fall on Sunday, Jan. 18. By Friday, however, that prediction was becoming less and less likely.

Here’s a look at the weekend forecast and snow chances as of Friday, Jan. 16.

Snow possible early Saturday in the mountains

Saturday morning will begin with clouds and precipitation moving in from the west.

Those in the mountains could see light snow late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The Charlotte region could see some rain Saturday morning.

That light snow could move in starting around 2 a.m., and should move out of the mountains around noon.

Some light snow could fall north of I-40 closer to the Charlotte area, but nothing of significance was expected, according to our First Alert meteorologists.

Weekend snow less likely in Charlotte

Snow was becoming less likely for the Charlotte region for Sunday.

A weather system expected to move through the Carolinas on Sunday was tracking further south and further east than initially forecast, according to our First Alert meteorologists.

If the area of low pressure moves closer to the coast, it would be unlikely for the center of the states to see any snow on Sunday. Precipitation looks like it may just move along the coast, and could be mostly rain for those areas on Sunday morning.

It may also be too warm for snow to form in most areas around Charlotte.

High temperatures on Saturday were forecast to reach the 50s, which is above average for this time of year. Temperatures were expected to be above freezing on Sunday morning, and in the 40s on Sunday afternoon.

We may not even have enough moisture in the air to form snow in the Charlotte area this weekend, First Alert Chief Meteorologist Al Conklin said Friday.

Still, some forecast models predict that snow will fall across the Charlotte area, and through central North and South Carolina on Sunday morning and even afternoon. However, our First Alert meteorologists say the chance of seeing an inch of snow in the Charlotte region was less than 5%, as of Friday.

Will snow stick if it falls this weekend?

If any snow does fall on Sunday, it probably won’t stick — at least not for long.

Low temperatures were forecast to be above freezing Sunday morning, and warm into the low 40s on Sunday afternoon.

Skies were expected to be at least partly sunny on Sunday, with even more sunshine likely the following Monday and Tuesday.

High temperatures were expected to reach the 40s on Monday and Tuesday next week.

So, a winter wonderland wasn’t too likely in Charlotte this weekend.
