NFL reveals surprise hometown opening act for Super Bowl 60

LOS ANGELES — Green Day will open Super Bowl 60 with a hometown performance celebrating six decades of the NFL’s championship game, the league announced Sunday.
The rock trio will kick off the Feb. 8 game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, with an opening ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the Super Bowl. The performance will feature a tribute to the game’s history as past Super Bowl MVPs are introduced on the field.
Green Day — formed in the East Bay and made up of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool — is expected to perform several of its best-known songs during the ceremony.
“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard,” the band told ESPN. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world.”
The opening ceremony will air live at 6 p.m. ET on NBC, Telemundo, Peacock and Universo.
The ceremony will take place before the pregame performances. Charlie Puth is set to sing the national anthem, Brandi Carlile will perform “America the Beautiful,” and Coco Jones will deliver “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
