I just streamed Prime Video’s new crime thriller with Sophie Turner — and now I can’t wait to binge-watch it all

Prime Video is fast becoming the place to be for Sophie Turner fans. Just a couple of days ago, we got our first look at the “Game of Thrones” star in costume as Lara Croft as the streaming service’s forthcoming “Tomb Raider” show entered production, and now she’s leading a brand-new British crime thriller that I suspect will be a big hit with Prime Video subscribers.

In “Steal,” a gang of armed thieves burst into the offices of Lochmill Capital, forcing the employees to obey their demands and force Zara (Turner) and Luke (“Saltburn” and “Gran Turismo” star, Archie Madekwe) to help execute their plan to transfer billions of pounds’ worth of pension funds out of the firm’s accounts.
Who would want to steal ordinary people’s pensions, and why? That’s precisely what DCI Rhys (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) is determined to find out, but as a recently relapsed gambling addict, he’s got to keep his own money problems at bay while dealing with the hidden agendas and secrets at the heart of this bold heist.
In addition to the above names, the “Steal” cast also includes Andrew Howard, Jonathan Slinger, Ellie James, Eloise Thomas, Andrew Koji and Harry Michell, among others.
Prime Video’s ‘Steal’ delivers a gripping opening episode that’s stolen my full attention

It sure feels like “Steal” has the makings of being an unmissable Prime Video original. I know it’s tough to judge a show based on one episode alone, but after streaming that first episode (and seeing what’s still to come throughout the season), I’m desperate to find time to binge-watch it ASAP.
Simply put, if “Steal” can maintain the level of intensity on display in its season premiere, then it’s going to be a pulse-pounding series that thriller fans shouldn’t skip. Across a taut 40-minute episode, it stages the attack on Zara’s investment firm, sets the stakes and then lays the groundwork for the search for our ruthless thieves.
Within the first 10 minutes, we’re already into the action. Quick cuts of the crew heading to the pension firm, tight framing and bursts of violence sell our thieves as menaces and promise they’re both capable and not to be messed with. And it all comes scored by this pulsing synth score, which serves to amplify the tension on screen. You could certainly accuse it of leaning into genre clichés, but as an opening, it’s an effective one.

By the end of the episode, the thieves have been and gone, and the police have gathered major witnesses (Zara included) together in the building to assess their condition as the investigation begins. We leave the premiere with Zara catching her breath in the bathroom, overhearing a couple of colleagues discuss their theory that it must’ve been an inside job. Before the credits roll, Prime Video then treats us to a sizzle reel of what’s still to come, teasing a much wider conspiracy, more action and way higher stakes.
It’s a lean, mean and well-composed opening episode that has certainly left a strong impression, and definitely has me itching to dive headlong into the remaining episodes. Which, ultimately, means the “Steal” season premiere has definitely done its job, and done it well.
