Los Angeles mayoral candidate Austin Beutner’s daughter dies at 22

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The daughter of Austin Beutner, candidate for Los Angeles mayor and former superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District, has died, the family announced Wednesday. She was 22.
Emily Beutner died at a hospital on Jan. 6, according to records from the L.A. County Medical Examiner. Her cause of death was not released.
“My family has experienced the unimaginable loss of our beloved daughter. We ask for privacy and your prayers at this time,” Beutner said in a statement.
Beutner, who launched a mayoral campaign last year, will challenge Mayor Karen Bass in the June 2026 election.
Bass issued a statement about his daughter’s death, which reads in part: “There is no way to describe the depth of pain experienced by parents who have lost a child. My heart is broken for the Beutner family, and I offer Austin, his wife Virginia, and their entire family my deepest condolences. I will hold them close in my heart, and I am ready to assist the family with whatever they might need.”
