450,000 student loan borrowers may get debt forgiven in $23B settlement

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -A $23 billion class-action settlement with the Department of Education could result in debt forgiveness for 450,000 student loan borrowers following years of legal disputes spanning three presidential terms.

The plaintiffs argued their schools misled them with false promises that their education would lead to higher earnings, transferable credits and stable careers. They also said the Trump administration delayed delivering the settlement they were entitled to.

Appeals court ruling expands potential relief

A federal appeals court denied a Trump administration request to postpone a decision on borrower applications at the end of July, a move that could allow an additional 200,000 borrowers to have their student loans forgiven.

Schools accused of misconduct

The advocacy group that brought the lawsuit forward in 2019 said dozens of schools were implicated for significant “institutional misconduct.” Many of those schools are now closed.
