Australian Open R2 previews and predictions: Musetti vs. Sonego, Munar vs. Ruud

It’s the battle of the Lorenzos, as Musetti takes on Italian countryman Sonego in the second round of the Australian Open. Casper Ruud and Jaume Munar will also be in action on Thursday.
(5) Lorenzo Musetti vs. Lorenzo Sonego
No. 5 seed Lorenzo Musetti was a bit out of sorts in his opener this week against Raphael Collignon, the world No. 72 from Belgium. Musetti dropped the first set and had to fight hard to pocket the second and third before Collignon retired in the fourth. Musetti made his way to the final in Hong Kong in his warmup event, so he is playing well…just hasn’t really done so in Melbourne just yet.
Occasional doubles partner Lorenzo Sonego crashed out of Hong Kong in the second set to talented (for real) world No. 318 Jerry Shang. Musetti may still be working out some of the rough spots, but he should advance.

(12) Casper Ruud vs. Jaume Munar
Jaume Munar ran into Casper Ruud last year at the Australian Open, as well. It was the first in a series of three encounters in 2025, all of which went Ruud’s way. In fact, the Norwegian has a 5-1 record over Munar.
It’s tempting to give the easy nod to Ruud given his straight-set win in the first round over Mattia Bellucci. The problem is that Ruud’s form isn’t up to his usual standards. Sure, it’s true that Munar had a five-set marathon in his opener — but he is one of the fittest players on tour. I still think Ruud will edge out Munar, but the Spaniard is going to make him work for it.
Cheryl pick: Ruud in 5
Ricky pick: Munar in 5
