Snowfall warning issued for up to 20 cm Wednesday

Flurries are expected to continue overnight Wednesday, after snow fell, causing yet another messy commute.
The accumulation was enough for Environment Canada to issue a yellow warning for snowfall, which predicted between 15 to 20 cm of snow. The warning was dropped just after 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
It’s the latest in what’s been a cold and snowy January, pushing through the beginning of 2026, with the latest bout coming at the hands of another Alberta Clipper.
The system prompted snow events in Kitchener and Waterloo, both start at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and in Wellesley and Woolwich, which start at 11:59 p.m.
The City of Cambridge also declared a snow event. It comes into effect Thursday at 7 a.m.
Allister Aalders, 570’s Meteorologist, said the region did avoid the brunt of the storm after it hit its peak around midday.
“It starts to ease a bit late afternoon into the evening,” he said. “However, with winds becoming westerly, gusting up to 50 or possibly 60 km/h tonight and for Thursday, some lake effect flurries will be developing, drifting into Waterloo Region tonight.”
Looking further ahead, Aalders said people can expect an additional 1 to 5 cm to fall overnight. the snowfall is expected to lighten, but continue through the evening and overnight, pushing into Thursday.
“Farther west, that’s where we could see additional amounts that are higher,” he said.
It means the roads will remain fairly treacherous through the latest wall of winter across the region, so drivers are recommended to drive with caution or avoid taking to the roads altogether if possible.
Full traffic details can be heard every 10 minutes on 570 NewsRadio.
Aalders added that, a blast of brisk, frigid temperatures will carry forward.
“The big story then turns to the cold weather that will be developing for the end of the week and the upcoming weekend,” Aalders said. “We’re down to -24 C Friday night into Saturday. Daytime highs on Saturday are near -15 C. We’re back below -20 C Saturday night, and for Sunday -13 C. It’s going to be a very cold weekend.”
It’ll be a good call to have those scarves, mittens, gloves, and toques handy, particularly for children and seniors in the days ahead.
