Chelsea are considering a move to sign Douglas Luiz on loan for the rest of the season.

The midfielder is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, but has only played 13 times for the City Ground club since joining last August.

Luiz is viewed as a good fit for Liam Rosenior’s side, adding quality and depth to their midfield as they challenge in the league, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

The Brazil international signed for Juventus from Aston Villa for €50million (£42.3m; $53.6m) plus €1.5m in add-ons in the summer of 2024 but struggled to establish himself during his season in Turin.

Luiz did miss time with a hamstring injury earlier this season but has only started twice in the Premier League since Sean Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou as Forest head coach in October. Luiz’s loan deal at Forest includes an obligation to buy conditional on the number of appearances he makes, with the club also holding a €30m option to buy if he does not hit that number.

Chelsea have Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia as their midfield options. However, Essugo and Lavia have struggled with injuries this season, with the former yet to feature and the latter playing only seven times.

Chelsea return to action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Should Chelsea sign Luiz, he would not be eligible to feature in their final Champions League league-phase game against Napoli next Wednesday, with the UEFA registration window not opening again until the start of the knockouts.

Sean Dyche’s Forest are away to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night.
