Nostalgia is rampant these days, just look at the “2026 is the new 2016” trend on social media. McDonald’s will not be left behind – its newest Happy Meal toys evoke the late ’80s.

The fast-food giant hasn’t issued an official news release, but Guillaume Huin, the company’s senior marketing director, posted on Thursday, Jan. 22 on the social media platform X that “McDonald’s Changeables are back on 1.27, featuring updated versions of both the robot and dinosaur designs from the original three Happy Meal programs released in 1987, 1989, and 1990.”

The toys, which are akin to Transformers, look like McDonald’s menu items but can be reconfigured into figures that look like, for instance, robots or dinosaurs.

“Changeables were – by far – the most requested Happy Meal program on X, across social media platforms and through customer service,” Huin said in his post.

The toys, which are available starting Tuesday, Jan. 27, will be made up of a collection of 16 characters. “Every single design has a name and its own little personality,” said Huin, who also uploaded a video showing the individual Changeables coming to Happy Meals.

McDonald’s had teased the toys’ return on its Instagram page and on its Happy Meal page with a note: “Changeables coming soon to your Happy Meal.” It updated the post with trading card-like profiles of the characters.

Commentors on those posts suggest fans are excited about the toys return. “OMG these totally bring back childhood memories,” said one commentor.

“So excited for these y’all,” posted another.

The Changeables have been a favorite of collectors and collections can be found on eBay. A video showing a batch of the toys has gotten more than 17,000 views.
