‘Tell Me Lies’ Showrunner Explains Lucy and Alex’s Explicit Sex Scene

So much happened in the first three episodes of Tell Me Lies Season 3 I hardly know how to process, but one of the most jaw-dropping moments? When Lucy and Alex—an old friend of Bree’s played by newcomer Costa D’Angelo—have sex in his apartment, during which she asks him to call her “pathetic.” The scene is intercut with Lucy’s confession that she lied about being sexually assaulted, and it’s intense to say the least.

Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer spoke to Variety about the scene, saying “On paper, the character’s a lot harder, and Costa came in with so much vulnerability and such a brokenness that he just blew off the screen for me.” Meaghan also noted that she was shocked by the final cut of Lucy and Alex’s sex scene, saying “I was like, we’re really doing it. We’ll see what people say. I thought they both did so well in that scene. I thought it was beautiful, and I haven’t seen anything like it before.”

Meaghan also talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the scene, saying of Lucy asking Alex to call her names, “She’s in such a shame spiral that she believes this is what she deserves. Also, there’s a part of her that has learned with her relationship with Stephen to conflate chemistry with toxicity. I think she’s gotten so used to that being part of what is sexual for her that she can’t give it up, and so she’s a little bit addicted to it.”

Meanwhile, Grace Van Patten told Decider “I think Lucy is just seeking shame and punishment, because she thinks that’s what she deserves. She’s gotten into a headspace with Stephen where she’s so used to being turned on by toxicity that it’s hard for her to get away from that. And Alex is sort of a safe space for her to explore those darker impulses.”

Episode 4 of Tell Me Lies Season 3 drops January 20.
