Sydney Sweeney has celebrated a major career milestone after her recent movie flops.

The Euphoria actress took to Instagram to share an article from Variety, reporting that The Housemaid has hit $200 million globally and a sequel is already in the works. The erotic psychological thriller, which was released in US theaters on December 19, 2025, stars Sydney as Millie Calloway, a young woman with a criminal past who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy couple, Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar).

Directed by Paul Feig, the film is an adaptation of Freida McFadden’s 2022 bestseller. Unlike Sydney’s movie Christy, which was a major box office flop, opening to a historically low $1.3 million in over 2,000 theaters, The Housemaid has reached a huge milestone – $200 million in global ticket sales.

This includes $100 million domestically and $100 million internationally after four weekends of release. The movie, which Lionsgate spent just $35 million to produce, is expected to end its theatrical run with $225 million to $275 million worldwide, according to Variety. Abroad, the movie – which also starred Michele Morrone as gardener Enzo and Elizabeth Perkins as Andrew’s mother, Evelyn – has reached $23.7 million in the UK, $17.5 million in France and $5.6 million in Australia.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Adam Fogelson said in a statement, “The Housemaid demonstrates what can be accomplished when the right stars – Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins – are matched with brilliant filmmakers and captivating material, with it all coming together to create a truly compelling moviegoing experience and an undeniable appetite for more. Paul Feig surpassed expectations by delivering a thriller that’s everything audiences have been asking for.

“Early on, our team – particularly the women at Lionsgate – recognized Freida McFadden’s trilogy as exceptional cinematic material before it became a literary phenomenon. Congratulations to our outstanding cast and filmmakers and the entire Lionsgate team.”

The sequel – The Housemaid’s Secret – is already on the words, with Sydney, Paul and Michele returning. The project, based on the second novel in the best-selling trilogy, has been in development for the past few months, according to variety. Lionsgate is planning a production start for later this year.

Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair, said in a statement announcing the greenlight, “It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next. We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney.”

The Housemaid’s success comes after biographical drama Christy, starring Sydney as 1990s boxing trailblazer Christy Martin, struggled to connect with moviegoers despite an extensive promotional campaign. Christy made history as the first female fighter to top-bill a pay-per-view broadcast and endured a brutal 2010 assault by her former husband and trainer.

Currently, she serves as a champion for domestic abuse survivors. Christy marked the inaugural US theatrical debut from Black Bear Pictures, the production company behind acclaimed films including The Imitation Game, Mudbound, and Sing Sing. However, the movie received mixed reviews and didn’t achieve the success hoped during its promotional campaign.
