James Gunn Just Dropped Our Best Look Yet at Lobo

“Finally.” That’s what Jason Momoa says in a new video when asked about playing Lobo. The larger-than-life actor has been willing the role into existence for years and gets to make it happen when Supergirl comes to theaters on June 26.
DC Studios president James Gunn revealed the teaser clip, which has our best look yet at the character (he was briefly in the first Supergirl trailer too) and, yup. That’s Lobo all right.

He’s got the bike, the chain, the hair, the look. Who better to bring Lobo to life, finally, after all these years? The answer to that question is nobody.
So that’s happening. What we don’t know is what role Lobo plays in Supergirl. Milly Alcock plays the Kryptonian survivor who, if the adaptation of the Woman of Tomorrow comic series holds true, will help a young woman traverse the universe to get revenge for the death of her father. Lobo isn’t in that story, but there are lots and lots of other weird aliens and planets. He fits in nicely.
You also have to wonder, what are Gunn’s plans for Lobo after Supergirl? Now that he’s finally going to be out there in the universe, will we get a full Lobo movie? Will he just continue to cameo in other people’s movies? Lobo isn’t an Earthling. There aren’t a ton of comfortable fits for him in all the projects currently coming in the DC Universe.
But you don’t cast Jason Momoa as Lobo, put him in your second big DC movie, and then let him go to waste. No, we think Lobo will be playing a big role moving ahead, and we are very interested to see when and how that happens.
We’ll get the first glimpse of it on June 26 when Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and co-starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, hits theaters.
Update: Soon after the above footage, Gunn also dropped this new Supergirl TV spot that incorporates the Lobo footage, and offers a bit more too.
