Mayra Jimenez death: Murder charges filed against Glendale firefighter Andrew Jimenez in connection to wife’s death in NoHo

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An off-duty Glendale firefighter has been charged with domestic violence murder in connection to the death of his wife in North Hollywood, officials announced early Friday afternoon.

Andrew Jimenez, 45, a firefighter-paramedic with the Glendale Fire Department, is charged with one count of murder with an allegation of using an axe as a deadly weapon.

Jimenez appeared in court in downtown Los Angeles Friday afternoon. If convicted as charged, Jimenez faces 26 years to life in state prison.

“The domestic violence death of Mayra Jimenez is a devastating reminder of the persistent scourge of intimate partner violence in our communities,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. “No one, including those sworn to protect others, is above the law, and we will hold the defendant accountable for this horrific crime and bring justice to Ms. Jimenez and her loved ones. Too often, cases of domestic violence go unreported and have the potential to end tragically, as in this instance. I want to urge anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse to contact the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 978-3600.”

The suspect’s attorney told Eyewitness News he was withdrawing from the case.

Police say they found the victim, identified as Mayra Jimenez, bludgeoned inside the couple’s home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers responded to a home in the 5600 block of Satsuma Avenue after a man went to a police station around 4 a.m. and requested a welfare check on his wife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The city of Glendale sent ABC7 a statement, saying that the fire department was notified by LAPD that an off-duty member of the department had been detained in connection with the investigation.

“LAPD is the lead investigating agency and the matter is ongoing,” the city’s statement read.

According to court records, he’s been booked into jail on suspicion of murder with a $2 million bail.

Detectives working the crime scene said they found Mayra Jimenez’s body with injuries from blunt force trauma inside the home. They said Andrew Jimenez, her husband, alerted police to the gruesome scene.

A statement from an attorney retained by Andrew Jimenez’s family appeared to suggest he found out his wife was having an affair.

“Our office is currently in contact with law enforcement regarding a diary of the decedent, apparently read moments before the homicide, that verified infidelity by the decedent,” the statement said.

Detectives say the tragedy appears to be an incident of domestic violence.

“From what we’ve determined, very preliminarily at this stage, this was an isolated incident of domestic violence between cohabitating adults,” LAPD Lt. Guy Golan said. “There’s no threat to public safety at this time. The individual who is in custody at Northeast Station, we believe, is responsible for the incident.”

Detectives were seen carrying out two large rifles from the scene.

Neighbor Camille Cabrera said she overheard detectives talking about the crime scene.

“I could just hear them talk about how horrific it was… it was just bloody. Next thing you know they found an axe. They said they found an axe,” she said.

Loved ones told Eyewitness News the couple had been married for more than 10 years. They said Mayra Jimenez was a teacher at Wilshire Park Elementary.

Friends say Mayra loved helping others – from teaching children to serving as a non-denominational ordained minister for weddings. They added that she was a huge Dodgers fan.

The incident remains under investigation.

A vigil was scheduled to take place at the school where Mayra taught Friday evening.

Jimenez has served with the Glendale Fire Department since April 28, 2008.

Glendale Fire Chief Jeff Brooks released a statement Friday that said:

“Our hearts are with Mayra Jimenez’s family and loved ones, and with all those impacted by this tragic loss. Mayra was part of our extended Glendale Fire Department family, and this has deeply affected our entire organization.

The formal charges filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office are extremely serious and deeply troubling. Any form of violence is appalling and unacceptable. This conduct does not reflect the values of the Glendale Fire Department or the character and professionalism of the women and men who serve this community with integrity and compassion every day.

The Los Angeles Police Department is the lead investigating agency, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is proceeding with the prosecution. The City of Glendale and the Glendale Fire Department will continue to cooperate fully throughout the investigative and legal process.

Because this matter involves an active investigation and ongoing criminal proceedings, the City and the Glendale Fire Department cannot comment beyond information released through official channels. Media inquiries related to the investigation should be directed to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.”

Jimenez’s arraignment was continued to February 19.
