Police uncovered a major cannabis farm while raiding an ‘illegal HMO’ in Coventry. It was found in the city on Monday (January 19).

Officers from Coventry Police were supported by the Coventry City Council Safer Housing Team. Together, they executed simultaneous warrants at properties believed to be unlicensed HMOs.

One address was found to be a cannabis farm and a man was arrested. Approximately 70 plants were seized.

Another HMO was reportedly housing too many people and said to be ‘oversubscribed.’ Investigations into the Coventry properties are ongoing.

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: “We assisted the Coventry City Council Safer Housing Team with simultaneous warrants at properties suspected to be illegal HMOs. Local authorities in the UK have the power to obtain warrants to enter and inspect such properties.

“We work closely with Coventry City Council to provide a presence to prevent a breach of the peace, but sometimes warrants can uncover illegal activity, for instance, drug production, exploitation and human trafficking.

“At one address, the property was found to be oversubscribed, and at another, a cannabis farm was discovered. Approximately 70 plants were found, and a male was arrested.

“It was a positive outcome and some good work with our partner agencies. If there are properties in your neighbourhood that have suspicious activity going on and you are concerned about them, please report them to us or Coventry City Council.”
