Wintry weather and freezing temperatures have struck Western North Carolina, triggering delays, closures and remote learning for some schools in the mountains ahead of the start of the school week on Monday, Jan. 26.

Areas in the North Carolina mountains were hit by a mix of wintry weather over the weekend and are expecting single digits ahead of the start of the week. The massive ice storm has knocked out power for many, causing schools in multiple counties to call off classes and close campuses for Monday, Jan. 26.

Here’s the latest school delays, closings, and remote learning announcements for communities in Western North Carolina for Monday, Jan. 26.

Which Western North Carolina schools are closed Monday, Jan. 26?

Several schools in the area announced closures after a winter storm spread freezing precipitation in the mountains

School closures, remote learning days

  • Alleghany: Closed Jan. 26. 
  • Asheville City Schools: Closed, optional teacher day, no remote learning for Jan. 26
  • Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College: Classes canceled for Jan. 26
  • Buncombe County Schools: Remote work will not be posted. Closed Monday, Jan. 26.
  • Burke County Public Schools: Closed for students and staff on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. The YMCA program is closed, and all extracurricular activities are canceled. 
  • University of North Carolina Asheville: Classes Canceled for Jan. 26-27
  • Henderson County Public Schools: Closed for students and staff Jan. 26
  • Caldwell County Schools: Closed for students and staff on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. All school-related activities, including extracurriculars, WrapAround, and athletic events, are canceled.
  • Cherokee Central Schools: Closed on Jan. 26 due to heating issues. 
  • Graham County Schools: Closed Jan. 26. Teacher workday, if road conditions permit. Two-hour delay is possible for Jan. 27, to be determined by the evening of Jan. 26. 
  • Haywood County Schools: Closed on Jan. 25 for students and staff.
  • Madison County Schools: Closed on Jan. 26. Annual leave day for staff. 
  • McDowell County Schools: Closed for students Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. Monday and Tuesday will be annual leave days for staff. 
  • Mitchell County Schools: Closed Jan. 26. This will be a “No Day” for staff. 
  • Polk County Schools: Closed Jan. 26. Annual leave day for staff.
  • Rutherford County Schools: Remote learning days on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. Remote work is authorized for eligible employees on both days.
  • Transylvania County Schools: Virtual learning days on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27 for all students. 
  • Warren Wilson College: Classes are canceled Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. Staff and faculty should plan to work remotely on Monday, Jan. 26. 
  • Yancey County Schools: Closed Jan. 26 for students and employees.
