Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, other districts closed Monday after winter storm

Charlotte area school districts are announcing changes to Monday classes as a result of winter weather hitting the area this weekend.

A winter storm brought a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that started Saturday evening and continued Sunday. Some areas near Charlotte could receive more than three-quarters of an inch of ice once the storm is over, the National Weather Service said Friday. The area remained under a rare ice storm warning as a result of the winter precipitation.

Likely contributing to school district decisions, temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits Monday, and lows could remain at or below freezing until late next week. That means precipitation could stick around on the ground for days after it falls.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Sunday morning that all schools will be closed Monday.

“This includes the cancellation of all school activities and programs, including Before-School Enrichment Programs (BSEP) and After-School Enrichment Programs (ASEP),” the district said in a statement posted to its website.

CMS has not yet announced plans for Tuesday.

Here’s how other districts in the region are planning for class Monday.
