Will After The Flood return for season 3 after explosive season 2? Sophie Rundle gives her verdict

We have been obsessed with the second season of ITV’s After The Flood ever since it returned to our screens earlier in January, and now that we’ve bingewatched the entire season, we need to know is it coming back for a third season?

This season we saw Jo (Sophie Rundle) newly promoted to detective, with a big crime on her hands – the death of two men, who were shot after they were dead. And that’s not all. She was also dealing with her split from Pat and handling raising their child.

It’s been six action packed episodes, that ended in the most heartbreaking of ways. Honestly, we need a word with these scriptwriters. So is the show going to return? Here’s what we know.

Will After The Flood get a season 3?

The sixth and final episode of After The Flood season two ended with the most shocking moment of all – the death of Pat. After trying to take Mackie down for most of the series, they finally had enough evidence against him, but it was too late. Mackie lured Pat to the spot where Pat had once proposed to Jo, and repeatedly bashed him over the head with a rock, and then kicking his body off the edge, killing him instantly.

And now of course we’re going to need another season to find out how Jo is going to handle this. Sophie Rundle, who plays Jo, has said she can definitely see another series happening.

“”I think it [season 3] works because [writer] Mick [Ford] and the other writers have built a community of people,” she told Radio Times. “That’s the key to making it feel alive. There are always stories to tell when it feels like a real group of dynamic people.”

What would happen in After The Flood season 3?

If After The Flood were to return for another season, we’d hope it would explore the aftermath of what happened with Mackie and Pat, and how Pat’s death impacts Jo.

The second season wrapped up the deaths of Todd Drake and Xav Palmer, and also revealed who had been poisoning the river the whole time – Alan Benson, so it’s likely we’d get a new crime for Jo and the team to investigate.

Who would returned for After The Flood season 3?

If After The Flood were to return for a third season we can’t imagine the show without Sophie Rundle returning as Jo. We’d also hope to have Lorraine Ashbourne back as Jo’s mum Molly Marshall, Philip Glenister as Jack Radcliffe and Tripti Tripuraneni as Deepa Das.

Sadly one cast member we don’t think would return would be Matt Stokoe as Pat Holman, as of course Pat met his death during the final episode. His killer – Phil Mackie was arrested during the final scenes, so we’re not sure if we’d see him back again, perhaps with some scenes featuring his trial?

We’re also not sure if Jill Halfpenny would return as DS Sam Bradley. DS Bradley was actually an anti-corruption officer sent to investigate Pat and Jo, and now that the case has been somewhat resolved we’re not sure if she will return, but we really hope to see her back on our screens.
