In an interview on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast on Tuesday, Claire Danes opened up about how she had a “meltdown” after realizing she’d gotten pregnant at 44. Danes, who already had two children with her husband, actor Hugh Dancy, recalled freaking out when she found out she was pregnant again with her third. “I called my OB/GYN in convulsive tears,” the actor said.
Danes said she’d been at a spa with her best friend when she first confessed that she suspected she might be pregnant after struggling with the heat there. “I wasn’t going to say anything, and finally I admitted it. I was like, ‘I totally lost my mind last night and just decided that I was pregnant,’” Danes recalled. “I went down this crazy rabbit hole and finally looked up ‘What are the odds of naturally conceiving at 44?’ And they’re, like, less than one percent, and I was like, So that obviously is ridiculous.” That night, Danes said she had “two strong cocktails,” then took a pregnancy test first thing the following morning. “It was just, like, bold, caps lock ‘PREGNANT,’ and I burst into tears,” she said.
Danes said getting pregnant again came as a shock because she had struggled to conceive in the past. “None of this was by design. I didn’t know it was physically possible — I was 44,” she said. “And, actually, Rowan was very hard-earned. I had to do two rounds of IVF. It just was so unlikely.”
Still, Danes said it was a happy surprise for her family. “This beautiful girl emerged, and she’s the best, and none of it was up to me — and I’m just delighted,” she said.
