LI Weather Monday: Treacherous Icy Roads, Possible Snow, Frosty Temps, Beach Erosion Across Area

LONG ISLAND, NY — As Long Islanders continue to dig out from Sunday’s storm, which brought up to foot of snow in some areas across the region, Monday could bring some new snowfall.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 1 p.m. The day is expected to be cloudy, with a high near 31 degrees — and will wind chill values between 15 and 20 degrees. A north wind of 6 to 10 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 20 mph, is expected, the NWS said.

Monday night will be mostly cloudy, then will gradually become mostly clear, with a low around 14 degrees, the NWS said. Wind chill values will make it feel as though it’s between zero and 10 degrees. A northwest wind of around 11 mph is expected, with gusts as high as 26 mph, the NWS said.

In addition, a coastal flood hazard message was issued for northwest, northeast, and northeast Suffolk County, as well as northern Nassau County, for early Monday.

Beginning at 1 a.m. Monday, up to one half foot of inundation was possible above ground level in those areas, the NWS said.

That brief minor flooding of the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline was expected to bring breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet along north to northeast facing shorelines along western Long Island Sound and Gardiners Bay — and could locally exacerbate flooding of shoreline roads and adjacent properties, with minor beach erosion also possible.

“Do not drive through flooded roadways,” the NWS said.

“The roads are treacherous,” East Hampton Town Highway Superintendent Stephen Lynch said Monday morning.
