Marquette coach Shaka Smart talks about defensive struggles
Coming off its best performance of the season – an 86-62 victory over Creighton – the Marquette men’s basketball team attempts to continue its recent team offensive surge when it travels to Newark, New Jersey, to face Seton Hall on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Over the last three Big East games, the Golden Eagles (8-14 overall, 3-8 in the Big East) have averaged 88.7 points, 15 points higher than their eighth-place 73.7 conference-game average. That includes a season-high 105 points in an overtime victory over Providence.
But the Pirates (15-6, 5-5) are the toughest team to score against in the league, allowing only 64.1 points a game. Marquette is only one of two Big East teams to finish with more than 70 points vs. the Pirates this season.
Both teams are at their best when they’re scoring off turnovers. Marquette (207) and Seton Hall (189) are first and second in the conference in steals.

In an 86-68 victory over Xavier on Jan. 28, the usually offensively challenged Seton Hall scored 24 points off 19 turnovers and had a season-high in points. The Golden Eagles scored 17 points off 12 turnovers in the win over Creighton.
Marquette’s Ben Gold had 19 points and seven rebounds in the first game between the teams last month. He was one of four Marquette players in double figures.
