The Edmonton Oilers placed goaltender Calvin Pickard on waivers on Sunday.
Pickard has a 5-6-2 record in 16 games this season, with a .871 save percentage and 3.68 goals-against average. He has started 64 regular-season games for the Oilers over the last three seasons and nine more in the playoffs, but is now the organization’s third goalie behind Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram.
The 33-year-old has struggled this season, ranking 63rd out of 91 goalies to play in the NHL with minus-3.5 goals saved above expected, according to MoneyPuck. He is in the final year of a two-year contract and carries a cap hit of $1 million.
Pickard went 7-1 last postseason and started Games 4 and 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. Edmonton has since reshaped its goalie room, acquiring Ingram in a trade with the Utah Mammoth just before the season and dealing starter Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December to acquire Jarry.
Jarry’s start in Edmonton has been bumpy. He missed time with an injury and has a save percentage of only .872 in nine starts. Ingram, who has split the crease with Jarry lately, has a .901 save percentage in 11 starts. Overall, the Oilers rank 26th in the NHL in team save percentage.
If Pickard clears waivers, he would be assigned to Edmonton’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. He played 42 games for the Condors between 2022 and 2024.
