There’s significant turnover on the Ravens’ coaching staff, but Baltimore is reportedly bringing back one of its own in Anthony Weaver.
Weaver is expected to be hired as the Ravens’ new defensive coordinator under Head Coach Jesse Minter, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Weaver, 45, was originally drafted by the Ravens in 2002 and played defensive end for four seasons in Baltimore. He returned to the Ravens in 2021 as John Harbaugh’s defensive line coach, run game coordinator, and assistant head coach.
Weaver and Minter did not cross paths in Baltimore. Minter was an assistant coach from 2017-2020 and Weaver was last in Baltimore from 2021-2023.
Weaver left for Miami after Zach Orr was named the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. After spending the past two seasons as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, Weaver will now reportedly get his shot. The only difference is that Minter confirmed that he will call the defensive plays on gamedays.
A highly respected coach and leader, Weaver was seemingly a finalist for multiple head coaching jobs this cycle. He reportedly interviewed twice for the head coach jobs in Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
Weaver was also reportedly a favorite to follow Harbaugh to New York as his defensive coordinator, but Harbaugh instead tabbed Dennard Wilson. Pittsburgh ultimately hired Mike McCarthy as its head coach, and McCarthy hired Patrick Graham as his defensive coordinator.
This would be Weaver’s third stint as a defensive coordinator. Before Miami, he was the leader of the Houston Texans’ unit in 2020.
In Weaver’s first year as the Dolphins’ coordinator in 2024, their defense went from 22nd in points allowed and 10th in yards to 10th in points and fourth in yards. The Dolphins stepped back to 24th in points and 22nd in yards last season, but that was partially due to midseason trades that meant the loss of some of the unit’s top players.
Weaver would bring a great deal of experience, including as an assistant head coach, to help Minter, defensive excellence, and relationships with many of Baltimore’s defensive players.
