Michelin-awarded restaurant abruptly shuts in ‘extremely difficult decision’

A POPULAR restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide has permanently shut its doors after 16 years of operations.

Six Rooftop, which sits on the top floor of Gateshead’s Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, admitted it had “faced difficult trading conditions, a tough economic climate and losses over a sustained period”.

The restaurant plated up its last dishes on February 2.

It enjoyed rave reviews from punters for its high quality meals and dramatic sweeping views of the River Tyne.

Six Rooftop was also etched in gastronomic history after it was added to the Michelin Guide in April 2024.

“Like many in the hospitality sector, we’ve absorbed increasing costs for as long as we could, rather than pass the full impact on to our guests, but the cumulative effect has now become unstable,” a statement from the restaurant said.

“After exploring every available option to continue trading we have made the extremely difficult decision to close.

“Despite the dedication of our team and the loyal support of our diners, the restaurant has faced difficult trading conditions, a tough economic climate, and losses over a sustained period.

“All valid gift vouchers will be refunded; we kindly ask that you contact us on [email protected] with your name and booking details.

“All customers with upcoming bookings, including events, will be contacted to source alternative arrangements or confirm cancellations.”

It comes just weeks after an award-winning Michelin-star restaurant pulled the plug after just six years in business.

On New Year’s Eve, Hjem restaurant, located in the Hadrian Hotel in Hexham, replaced its usual tasting menu with a night of celebration dubbed “Hjem’s Last Hurrah”.

“We wanted our final night at Hjem to feel like a true celebration – not just of what we’ve achieved, but of the people who have been part of it,” head chef and co-founder Alex Nietosvuori said.

“Every dish, every song, every glass raised will be a thank you to our guests and team.”
