Police swarm De Montfort University Leicester campus after ‘very serious incident’

De Montfort University has issued a statement after a ‘very serious incident’ on its Leicester campus has led to road closures and a police cordon outside The Innovation Centre

A UK university says it’s working with the police following a ‘very serious incident’ on campus tonight. De Montfort University (DMU) released a statement after a cordon was put in place near the crossing and a section of pavement outside The Innovation Centre, part of DMU, on Oxford Street from just before 6pm.

Leicestershire Police have closed off the road at the junction with Grange Lane as they “deal with an incident”, but they are yet give any details as to what exactly happened, , reports Leicestershire Live.

A spokesperson for DMU said: “We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus this evening. We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident.”

Eyewitnesses say four police cars and seven officers from Leicestershire Police were present at the scene. Several cordons are since believed to have been set up.

The local fire and rescue service were also on hand, and there were reports of DMU security officers being in the area too.

The uni has issued a statement

In a brief statement issued just before 6pm, Leicestershire Police said Oxford Street – at the junction of Grange Lane – had been closed “while we deal with a police incident”.

“Please avoid the area,” a force spokesman urged.

Leicestershire Police have been contacted for further comment.
