Lights go out at mixed doubles curling in first Olympic event

Well, that was not the start Olympic organizers had in mind.

The lights went out and flickered a few times on Wednesday at the mixed doubles curling venue in the opening event of Milano Cortina 2026.

After about a five-minute delay in the first end of the first draw, play resumed in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Canada’s Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant were facing Czechia in one of four games in the opening draw.

“It wasn’t unsettling at all,” Peterman said after her team’s 10-5 win, per Curling Canada. “I mean, we’re ready to expect the unexpected and a short power outage is totally fine. We just kind of laughed it off and took the time to to chat about what we wanted to do.”

Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium was originally built in 1955 for the 1956 Olympics. The stadium was then the venue for the opening ceremony and figure skating.

There have been venue concerns heading into the Olympics.

The construction of the main hockey arena was delayed, with workers hustling to put finishing touches on the facility this week.

Also, a cable-car system for spectators at the women’s alpine ski venue will not be completed on time.
