Bump: Why Seahawks’ Bryant could make big impact in Super Bowl

Between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots rosters, there are a number of players who could make a major impact in the Super Bowl.

There are, of course, some very obvious candidates like Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, or Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and cornerback Christian Gonzalez. But there very likely will be some players whose names aren’t coming up as much who will make their mark on the game’s final outcome.
During his Four Down Territory segment Wednesday on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy, former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus identified a Seahawks safety Coby Bryant as someone who is flying under the radar, but could have a big game against New England.
With many standout players around him, Bryant has somewhat quietly continued to be a defensive playmaker who excels at creating turnovers for the Seahawks. He was second on the team with four interceptions and added a forced fumble in 15 games during the regular season. That came after he had three picks and a forced fumble last season and four forced fumbles as a rookie in 2022.

Bumpus believes Bryant has a prime opportunity to make a major impact on Sunday because of how the Patriots like to feature their tight ends in the passing game. Veteran Hunter Henry led New England with seven touchdown receptions and was second in receptions (60), targets (87) and yards (768) during the regular season. Second-string tight end Austin Hooper added another 263 yards and two TDs on 21 catches.
“I highlighted last week that I love the way the Patriots used their tight ends. I said that Nick Emmanwori needs to play a big role in that,” Bumpus said. “To help out with the tight ends, too, I’m looking at a guy like Coby Bryant. Because what they do with these tight ends, they’ll run them on these shallows and these crossing routes, and what lots of teams like to do – the Seahawks do this well – is that crossing route is met with a safety getting downhill and kind of intercepting that crossing route.”
That’s a task Bumpus feels Bryant is more than ready to handle.
“Coby Bryant is a guy who’s versatile as well. He can play in the box and play over the top. I think he’ll be good with the tight ends. Coby’s going to have a good game,” Bumpus said. “… He’s one of the more disciplined players on this team. I’ve only seen him really out of position a couple of times … but for the most part, man, Coby’s a responsible guy. So I’m looking for Coby to intercept those crossing routes with those tight ends and to have a big hit. Coby likes to get downhill. He likes to hit.”
