Police Investigating Report of Shots Fired Near Wootton High School

The Montgomery County Police Department is investigating a shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville on Monday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to the school at approximately 2:15 pm after receiving reports of possible gunfire in the area. As officers responded and began investigating, Montgomery County Public Schools placed the campus on lockdown as a precaution.

At 2:53 pm, police reported that preliminary information indicated the shooting occurred inside the school and that one victim had been confirmed. Authorities have not released details about the victim’s condition.

In a 3:05 pm update, MCPS confirmed that the incident involved a student shooting and that one individual was injured and receiving medical attention. Officials said police and emergency responders remain on scene and urged families not to come to the school, noting that they will not be permitted on campus. At 3:17 pm, MCPD announced that the reunification site would not be Robert Frost Middle School and said an alternate location is being identified, with updates to be provided when available.

At 3:30pm, MCPS announced that police have arrested a suspect offsite but continue to ensure the school building is safe. One individual has been injured and transported to the hospital. Police remain on scene. Parent/Student reunification is being planned now.

Police say more information will be released as the investigation continues.
