Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll have been sidelined by hamate bone fractures after arriving early to their respective spring training camps.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that both stars would require surgery for the breaks one day after the New York Mets announced that shortstop Francisco Lindor was being evaluated to go under the knife for a similar injury to his left (non-throwing) hand.

Carroll, who reports say sustained the injury to his right (non-throwing) hand during live batting practice Tuesday, is expected to have surgery on Wednesday. He will no longer be able to suit up for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, which begins its play in Pool B on March 6. Whether the two-time All-Star can recover in time for the D-Backs’ season opener on March 26 is not yet known.

Orioles general manager Mike Elias told reporters at the team’s spring facilities in Florida that Holliday, 22, will undergo the operation on his right (throwing) hand on Thursday and miss the start of the season.

A typical rehabilitation process for injuries to the hamate, which the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes as a small carpal bone on the pinky finger side of the wrist that connects the wrist to the hand, takes four to six weeks.
