Calgary police: Speed factor in fiery fatal crash near Stoney Trail

Speed is being considered a factor after a man in his 20s died in a fiery crash near Calgary’s Stoney Trail on Tuesday, police say.

It happened when a 1997 Ford Escort was driving west on 16 Avenue NE in the left-hand lane, approaching Stony Trail at around 2 p.m. on Feb. 10.

Then, when the vehicle was exiting, it entered the median and crashed into a concrete pier.

Police say the driver died at the scene.

Investigators say drugs and alcohol aren’t factors in the collision, but add that excessive speed is being investigated.

16 Avenue NE was closed in both directions at Stoney for several hours. The road reopened around 6:30 p.m.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
