Report: Phils to release Castellanos

Nick Castellanos’s time with the Philadelphia Phllies is at its end.

The team announced the release of the veteran outfielder on Thursday.

Reports surfaced earlier in the week that Castellanos was instructed not to attend the opening of spring training.

A 34-year-old native of Hialeah, FL, Castellanos was set to enter the final season of a five-year, $100 million contract.

Castellanos appeared in 147 games last season, posting a -0.8 WAR. He batted .250 with 137 hits, 17 home runs, 72 runs batted in an an OPS of .694 in 547 at-bats.

Castellanos is a veteran of 13 seasons, having previously suited up for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. A two-time All-Star, Castellanos is a career .272 hitter with 1,742 hits, 250 home runs, 920 runs batted in and an OPS of .785 in 1,688 games.
