DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After the first day of Speedweek at Daytona International Speedway
, two things are known: which driver will start first in Sunday’s DAYTONA 500, and which will start second.
Qualifying consisted of two rounds on Wednesday
with the top 10 fastest single-lap speeds transferring into the second round to battle for the pole.
Three Hendrick Motorsports drivers – Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson
and Chase Elliott – made the final 10. Ultimately, Bowman turned in the sixth-best lap at 49.152 seconds with Larson right behind him at 49.158. Elliott’s second-round lap of 49.22 placed him ninth in qualifying.

Finalizing the starting grid for the DAYTONA 500 is different than any other race
on the Cup Series schedule. While Wednesday’s single-lap runs determined the front row, the rest of the field will be set in Thursday night’s Duel at DAYTONA races. Both Alex Bowman and William Byron will compete in the first Duel with Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott rolling off in the second. The results of the first race will set the odd-numbered starting spots in Sunday’s field while the second race will fill out the even-numbered row. A total of 41 cars will make the starting grid with four open cars being eliminated on Thursday night.
