A tense extra-end battle saw Switzerland remain undefeated when they played Great Britain in Sunday evening’s seventh men’s round-robin session, coming out on top with a 6-5 final score.

The first two ends saw both teams draw for one point and in the third Great Britain stole a single after an attempted double take-out by Switzerland’s fourth player Benoit Schwarz-Van Berkel was unsuccessful, still leaving in one British counter.

In the fourth end, Switzerland had a chance to draw for two, however, despite passing multiple guards, their stone didn’t curl enough to get right on the button between one of their own and a British stone, so they had to settle for one.

Before the fifth end break, Great Britain tried to score two more, but Bruce Mouat’s hit-and-roll moved just slightly too far and they only scored one. They went into the break ahead by 3-2.

After a blanked sixth end, Mouat attempted a hit-and-roll with this final stone. However, his stone rolled out of the house, exposing a vacant button along with a counting Swiss stone in the house. This allowed Schwarz-Van Berkel to draw his last stone for two and a 4-3 lead.

The eighth end saw Bruce Mouat draw for one and level the score to 4-4. The teams then swapped singles with draws in the ninth and tenth end, forcing the game into an extra end.

Switzerland had hammer in this end, but when Bruce Mouat played his final stone, Great Britain were lying three. However, Schwarz-Van Berkel played a precise take-out removing the closest British stone to the centre and leaving his own close enough to score the winning point, closing the game at 6-5.

After the game, skip Yannick Schwaller, “Feeling very good of course. Beating Team Mouat, it feels good always when you do that.

“They were playing good, we were playing good and it’s always a dogfight but it’s always a lot of fun, that’s the type of game we want to play out there. I was happy we could show a real battle on the Olympic stage here.”

Speaking about the tense extra end, he said, “ All in all just a very good grind by the boys. Again, a tough shot to win for Benoit through the hole, but managed so well and I’m so happy we got away with the win there.”

And looking at what’s needed to have successful rest of the campaign, Schwaller said, “We have to have a lot of fun, that comes first I guess. We really enjoy our time here as a group. I think that also shows on the ice and that’s what we’re going to continue doing. A lot of things we are doing right now is very, very good, so more of the same and enjoying it along the way.”

Italy set off on the right foot in their game when they scored three points in the first end. Strong build-up play meant they already had two stones in the house when skip Joel Retornaz came to play his last. He then played a raise on a single Czechia stone to score three.

Czechia fought back in the second end when, already lying one, skip Lukas Klima played a double take-out for two.

In the third end, Italy replied when Retornaz played a take-out on a Czech counter and they scored two after an umpire’s measure. They stole another single in the fourth end after an attempted raise tap-back from Czechia’s Klima went wrong.

In the ninth and final end, Klima’s double take-out was unsuccessful, leaving Italy to steal one, and Czechia conceded with the final score at 10-5.

After the game Italy skip Joel Retornaz said, “We’re feeling good. We wanted to win this game for sure and we went out there hungry and I think the performance was very solid by our team and we deserved a win tonight.”

Looking forward to the rest of the competition, he said, “I think we just need to keep performing the way we are. Even the losses were very good games, we were solid.

“A few details here and there are when we lost our games, so we’ll try to avoid those details and if we keep playing the way we’re playing I’m sure more wins will come.”
