Online make-up retailer Beauty Bay has filed a notice that it may appoint administrators.

The owners of the Manchester-headquartered business brother Arron and David Gabbie now have 10 days to work out a deal for the company which is run from Exchange Quay and has a distribution centre in Salford.

The company website is currently down.

In a statement the company said: “Like many other companies operating across the retail space, we’ve been battling hard in the face of strong headwinds over the past 12 months.

“Cost inflation and fragile consumer confidence have had a heavy impact on consumer spending.

“Over recent weeks, we’ve been working closely with our stakeholders to find a path forward, including exploring options for sale and investment, with the aim of putting in place a stable financial platform upon which we can continue to build.

“While we continue to explore the options available to us, we have today taken steps to protect the position of the business as we strive to find a way forward.”

In the last year for which figures are available, to the end of March 2024, the company hit sales of £78.1 million in the year (2023 – £75.5 million), an increase of 3.4% on the prior year and returned to profits of £836k, after years of losses (2023 – loss £5.6m).

The last annual report notes that bank loans due within one year increased to £1.5m (2023 – £1.1m) and that in August 2023 the company renewed both its existing trade facility of up to £2.5m and overdraft facility of £0.5m with HSBC, which has four outstanding charges over the business.

At the time the business employed 127 people.

Beauty Bay re-focused its strategy in 2023 to “drive unit economics and profitability at an order level” instead of “chasing top line turnover with the associated high cost of doing this” resulting in a significant increase in profitability.

Interpath had been seeking a buyer for the company.
