Joss Reimer has been named Canada’s next chief public health officer for a three-year term that begins in April.

Dr. Reimer is the former president of the Canadian Medical Association. She was also the chief medical officer for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

In a statement on Friday, the Public Health Agency of Canada said Dr. Reimer has expertise in health communications, health equity, sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections and immunizations.

It also said Dr. Reimer has contributed to numerous scientific publications and presentations in both official languages and served as the medical lead and spokesperson for Manitoba’s COVID-19 Vaccine Taskforce.

She also was the undergraduate director of population health at the University of Manitoba for nine years.

PHAC said Dr. Reimer joins the agency at a critical time while Canada faces a resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases, threats posed by avian influenza, HIV and tuberculosis and the ongoing impacts of the illegal drug crisis and harmful impacts of false health information.
