Spoiler alert: This story includes details from the latest episode of HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

The penultimate episode of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” treated viewers to a thrilling Trial of Seven as Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett) faced off. A Trial of Seven is an ancient ritual in which an accused must fight six allies against the accuser and his own six fighters. The battle is meant to honor the Seven Gods to ensure judgment is served.

The trial was held after Duncan, also known as Dunk, struck Prince Aerion for breaking a puppeteer’s fingers. In the world of “A Knight of Seven Kingdoms,” it is unfathomable to stand up to a member of the royal family.

While Dunk emerged victorious in the trial, the battle was not without bloodshed and deaths, including a shocking one no one saw coming. Viewers were also given an insight into Dunk’s past and his journey to Westeros.

Adapted from author and co-creator George R. R. Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas, the “Game of Thrones” prequel series premiered Jan. 18, taking viewers almost a century before the events of HBO’s former juggernaut.

“Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends,” the series’ synopsis says.

Co-creator and showrunner Ira Parker previously explained that the series is set between “two shows that everyone has seen and that everyone loves (‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘House of the Dragon’) in a time where Targaryens don’t have their dragons anymore.”

Parker added that the Targaryens in the new show are “very much on the decline” and find themselves in this “weird middle place.”
