Everything you need to know about Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane’s brawl as Everton face Manchester United again
- Manchester United play Everton on Monday evening at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Michael Carrick is looking to extend his unbeaten run during this spell as United boss to six and he probably won’t be expecting this match to be quite as eventful as the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
- When the two sides did battle at Old Trafford in November 2025, midfielder Idrissa Gueye was sent off just 13 minutes into the game for striking his own team-mate, Michael Keane. The conflict began when Gueye lost possession in his own penalty area after a sloppy pass intended for Keane.
- This error nearly led to a goal for United’s Bruno Fernandes, sparking a heated argument between the two team-mates over defensive assignments. The exchange escalated, leading to the Senegal international slapping the defender across the face and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford broke the pair up.
- Referee Tony Harrington immediately brandished a straight red card to Gueye for violent conduct, leaving Everton to play with 10 men for nearly 80 minutes. Despite the early disadvantage, the Toffees secured a historic 1-0 victory against Ruben Amorim’s side thanks to a stunning 29th-minute strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
- This was Everton’s first win at Old Trafford since 2013 and David Moyes’ first-ever away win at the stadium in 18 attempts. In the dressing room after the game, Gueye reportedly issued a sincere apology to both Keane and the entire squad.
- Gueye served a three-match suspension following the red card, which saw him miss key fixtures against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest. Everton appealed the dismissal immediately, but the FA rejected it.
- Results-wise, the incident surprisingly somewhat galvanised Moyes’ squad, leading to an impressive run of form throughout the winter. Since that victory at Old Trafford, Everton have climbed into the top half of the table, currently sitting in ninth place with European qualification not out of the question.
- Heading into Monday’s match, both players remain integral parts of the team. They have started several games together since the incident.
