Spied! The Next-Gen 2027 Chevy Silverado We Spotted Looks a Lot Like the Leaked Patent Images

- The 2027 Chevy Silverado is getting closer to production as new spy photos show more exterior details.
- The next generation of Chevy’s half-ton truck looks a lot like the patent images that were leaked last year.
- The new Silverado will be officially revealed sometime later this year, which suggests that it’ll launch as a 2027 model.
Every day is another day closer to when General Motors finally reveals its next generation of full-size pickup trucks. Today, we have new spy photos that give us our best look yet at the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The truck is still completely covered in camouflage that tries to obscure its exterior details, but the skin-tight wrap in these photos is a lot more revealing than the heavy camo worn by test mules we’ve previously spotted in the wild.

At the end of last year, a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) appeared to show the Silverado’s new design in full. While GM said at the time that its patent filings aren’t always indicative of future products, from what we can tell by our spy photos that show three Silverado models on a car carrier, the production versions will look an awful lot like the one in the patent images. Specifically, the front end features the same grille shape bisected by a bar that connects high-mounted daytime running lights. The latter also mirrors the arrangement seen in the patent images, which include lower C-shaped headlight units that are partially visible in the new spy shots.

From the back, we can see that the next-gen Silverado has taillights that extend further into the bedsides, just like in the patent images. The tailgate shape also matches the one in the filings, and we can see that the familiar side steps are still integrated into the rear bumper. We’ve previously spotted the truck’s square quad-tipped exhaust pipes in the photo above, but we now have a better look at its rear suspension. While GM’s latest generation of full-size SUVs adopted a more sophisticated multilink setup, the Silverado models in these spy photos all feature a solid rear axle.

Our spy photographer speculates that two of the three trucks he spotted are similar to the mid-level LT trim. Both roll on 20-inch wheels, but one of them appears to be better positioned for off-roading, judging by its 33-inch-tall Goodyear Wrangler TrailRunner AT tires. The third could be a top-of-the-line High Country based on its Bridgestone Alenza all-season rubber.
While we don’t yet have any specific details regarding the next-gen Silverado’s powertrain lineup, we know it’ll include a small-block V-8. The current turbocharged four-cylinder and diesel six-cylinder engines will also likely carry on when the new generation is officially revealed sometime later this year. That would make the Chevy Silverado a 2027 model, but we expect to find out for sure in the coming months.

His aspiration growing up was to become a millionaire with a Jay Leno–like car collection. Apparently, getting rich is harder than social-media influencers make it seem, so he avoided financial success entirely to become an automotive journalist and drive new cars for a living. After earning a journalism degree at Central Michigan University and working at a daily newspaper, the years of basically burning money on failed project cars and lemon-flavored jalopies finally paid off when Car and Driver hired him.
