Ben Shepherd announced his co-star Cat Deeley’s absence from This Morning on Tuesday, just minutes into the ITV programme.

Ben welcomed Angela Scanlon to the show as he simply explained, “Cat is away”, without offering any further details about his co-star’s absence.

Opening the show, Ben said, “Hello and welcome to your Tuesday’s This Morning. A lovely, warm welcome to the gorgeous Angela Scanlon, who is here. Lovely to have you here.”

“Lovely to be here,” Angela replied as Ben continued, “Cat’s away, so like a little play date with Angela. How was half-term?”

“Half term was like a boxing match,” Angela joked. You know, a lovely, cuddly boxing match. “

Elaborating on what she meant, the ITV host shared, “Four-year-old and a soon-to-be eight-year-old. She turns eight tomorrow.”

When asked by Ben what plans they had to celebrate, the Strictly Come Dancing star added, “Well, we got birthday bangs yesterday. A birthday haircut.

“Very grown-up… I don’t know where…I think Hannah Montana may be inspired, but she wanted bangs, and you know she’s eight, so you get what you want when you’re eight.”

“She’s a Scanlon, right?” Ben joked. And they’re back at school, so a relief for everybody.”

Angela shared her excitement, “Thank you. Goodbye. Love you.”

“So while they’re at school, we can play here in the studio,” Ben stated. “We’ve got a good show playing, don’t we?”

“In just a moment, he has been released on bail after Peter Mandelson’s arrest last night on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Nick Ferrari and Ashley James will be here to discuss that and more of today’s headlines.

Ben added, “Also, it’s the era that brought us the Spice Girls, Friends, and of course, Snake. The 90s are iconic for many things, including fashion.”

While the hosts did not address why Cat was absent, some fans took to Twitter to comment, with one writing, “No Cat today.. “

Another pointed out, “The continuity announcer obvs didn’t get the memo re Cat.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
