Caps beat Flyers 3-1 in return from Olympic break

Descend with us back into the boy aquarium. After 19 days off, the Washington Capitals slowly came to life in a home game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

After a scoreless first period – except there was a score, it was just 0-0 – Hendrix Lapierre fed Rasmus Sandin to give the Caps a well-earned lead.

…Which they blew thirty seconds into the third, off the stick of Noah Cates, following a defensive-zone turnover. Declan Chisholm fed Trevor van Riemsdyk to put the Caps ahead for good.

Aliaksei Protas scored an empty-netter shorthanded to lock it up.

Caps win!

  • Almost three weeks without Caps hockey felt like an eternity. The Olympics were not what I remembered. We say it’s a “best on best” tournament, but that’s true only sometimes. Not when the Slovakian grinders are out against the German energy line. I missed the sheer star power of Rasmus Ristolainen and Brandon Duhaime.
  • The Caps of the first ten minutes were still on break, outshot by ten attempts until they gained composure following a penalty kill. Things got a lot better from there.
  • Culminating with Hendrix Lapierre sending a great pass to Rasmus Sandin for the opening goal. Lapierre was impactful from his first shift. Great outing for a guy fighting for a roster spot.
  • Katie says Sandin’s was the first NHL goal since reconvening.
  • Aliaksei Protas made an unconventional breakout play: duffing it towards an orange jersey in the middle of the ice. Cates scored seconds later.
  • Trevor Zegras went down late with an injury after connecting with known goal-getter Trevor van Riemsdyk, who had scored on the prior shift.
  • Everyone is asking me, Peter, when will you chime in about the Team USA controversy? Peter, the people need to hear from you! Well, now that I am the father OF A DAUGHTER, I have had a realignment. I am now a conservative republican, and even if I weren’t we all need to understand that it’s not political just to go to the White House. Sports is supposed to unite us, not divide us.
  • Logan Thompson good. Would of won gold probably.
  • Everyone join us in wishing happy birthday to RMNB alumna Elyse Bailey, who was tapping on the tank tonight. We love you, Elyse.

So the goals came from Lapierre-Sandin and Chisholm-TVR. Who needs Olympians. The biggest accomplishments from stars like Pro and Ovechkin were turnovers and penalties. Oh, and I guess the empty-netter too.

Fine. I’ll take it. The Caps are going to need contributions from all over the lineup if they’re going to draw themselves back into the playoff picture. And with approximately one hundred thousand games in the next few weeks, they’ll have lots of chances to do so.
