Stuttgart vs Celtic preview
Martin O’Neill celebrated 1,000 games as a manager last week as Celtic hosted Stuttgart in the Europa League playoff, but things could not have gone much worse. Fan protests disrupted the beginning of the match before they were humbled 4-1 on home turf by the visitors.
Things did not get any better at the weekend as the Hoops suffered another massive blow in the Scottish Premiership, losing 2-1 to Hibs to fall six points off league leaders Hearts, while centre back Auston Trusty was sent off.
With one of the most important derby clashes in years against Rangers looming on Sunday, it’s far from ideal that the Bhoys must travel to Stuttgart for this second leg of this Europa League tie trailing by three goals.
Much of O’Neill’s career has been defined by success in Europe but his side were outclassed in the first game between these two, demonstrating the gulf that has opened up between Scottish sides and the continent’s elite over the last year or so.
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who has been struggling badly since returning from a shoulder injury, was booed by his own fans after a series of errors that led to Stuttgart goals.
O’Neill now has a decision whether or not to rest players for Sunday’s trip to Ibrox or to go full strength to try and salvage some pride from a tie which is all but over.
Stuttgart were held to a 3-3 draw away to Heidenheim at the weekend but should have little trouble getting the better of a battered and bruised Celtic side.
The hosts are fourth in the Bundesliga and have lost just one of their last eight games, scoring at least three goals in six of those.
Expect Stuttgart to cruise through and cover a one-goal deficit on the handicap by winning by two or more.
Stuttgart vs Celtic Bet Builder
Stuttgart to win
The German hosts have won six of their last eight games and should be able to extend that run against a poor Celtic side.
Max Mittelstadt to score or assist
The left-back is Stuttgart’s penalty-taker and referee Irfan Peljito has given eight spot kicks in his last eight European or international games. Middelstadt also has five assists this season.
Bilal El Khannous anytime goalscorer
The former Leicester man was a persistent thorn in Celtic’s side in the first leg and has five goals in eight Europa League matches.
