Report: Patriots to release wide receiver Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs’ New England Patriots tenure is coming to an end.

The AFC champions have told the receiver they will release him when the league’s new year officially begins March 11, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old signed a three-year, $63.5-million contract with the Patriots last off-season and will exit the franchise having completed just one season of it.

In 17 games last season, Diggs hauled in 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. He added 14 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown in four playoff games.

He appeared to confirm his impending release in a social-media post on Wednesday.

In February, Diggs pleaded not guilty to felony strangulation and other criminal charges stemming from an alleged dispute with his personal chef.

Diggs’ arraignment was originally slated for Jan. 23 but was moved to Feb. 13 — five days after the Patriots’ 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
