Flick admits he took a risk with Pedri and hits out at injury situation

The coach saw his team win 3-0 but ultimately fail to make the final, as Atletico go through 4-3 on aggregate to face Athletic Club or Real Sociedad.

Flick is obviously disappointed but was proud of his players for their incredible efforts over the 90 minutes.

“We were brave and I’m proud. It was a spectacular match. We were one goal short, but we played very, very well. When you see Bernal, Cubarsí, Gerard… young players at this level… they gave everything for this club. That said, we’re disappointed that we didn’t get that fourth goal,” he told reporters.

“Everyone was convinced of how to play. Everyone was fantastic. Bernal scored two goals, and Cubarsí was incredible too. It’s the mentality I wanted. They can be among the best in the world. I really enjoy watching the players.”

Flick also spoke about Pedri who put in another spectacular performance. The coach was spotting gesturing at the midfielder in the second half, seemingly asking if he wanted to come off, but Pedri wanted to stay on.

The Barca boss explained: “We needed Pedri on the pitch. I’m very happy that he didn’t get injured because leaving him on the field for 90 minutes was a risk.”

“We have two more injuries and I’m not happy about it. We need to talk,” he added. “Because with Frenkie, we have three injured players. We need to talk to the medical team, to the staff, to prevent three players from getting injured in one week.”
