Next Xbox Console to Play PC Games

Microsoft’s next Xbox videogame console is codenamed Project Helix and will play Windows PC games.

“Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console,” Microsoft Games CEO Asha Arma tweeted today. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”

So that’s interesting: We had expected the next Xbox console to essentially be a Windows PC, which is true of all Xbox generations save the Xbox 360. But we also expected it to play PC games and, more to the point, for that to mean that all Windows PCs would be capable of playing previous generation Xbox games. This tweet doesn’t indicate that, but it also doesn’t refute it.

Anyway, for those who want to see Microsoft move forward with new Xbox consoles, this is obviously good news. But hopefully Ms. Arma will continue dropping tidbits like this going forward. Including the expected timeline for that console, which previous rumors suggested was a late 2027 deliverable.
