Wild acquire Jeff Petry from Panthers for conditional pick

The Minnesota Wild have acquired veteran defenseman Jeff Petry from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a conditional 2026 seventh-round draft pick, the club announced Thursday afternoon.
Petry, 38, has appeared in 58 games with the Panthers this year, collecting eight points (all assists) while averaging 14:51 of ice time. He’s under contract through the end of the season at a $775,000 NHL cap hit.
As per Minnesota’s press release announcing the trade, “the draft pick becomes a fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft if Minnesota wins two playoff rounds and Petry plays in 50 percent or more of the Wild’s playoff games during those first two rounds.”

The Edmonton Oilers originally selected Petry in the second round (No. 45 overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft. The 6’3″ right-shot defenseman spent three seasons at Michigan State University after being drafted before turning pro in the Oilers organization in 2010.
After beginning his NHL career with parts of five seasons in Edmonton, Petry found himself on the move late in the 2014-15 campaign when the Montreal Canadiens paid second- and fourth-round picks in the 2015 NHL Draft to acquire him. Petry remained with the Canadiens until 2022, playing top-four minutes throughout his tenure and most notably helping the team reach the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.
Following the 2021-22 season, the Canadiens flipped Petry and Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Mike Hoffman and a 2023 fourth-round pick. After just one year in Pittsburgh, the Michigan-born Petry joined the Detroit Red Wings for the following two seasons before signing with the Panthers in 2025.
In 1,039 career NHL games since 2010 with the Oilers, Canadiens, Penguins, Red Wings, and Panthers, Petry has collected 96 goals, 393 points, and 426 penalty minutes. He’s added five goals and 13 points in 48 career playoff contests, all with Montreal.
