Sharks acquire Jett Woo from Canucks for Jack Thompson

A small minor-league deal a day before the NHL Trade Deadline.
On Thursday, the San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Jett Woo from the Vancouver Canucks. In exchange, the Canucks receive defender Jack Thompson in a one-for-one deal.
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the #Canucks have acquired D Jack Thompson from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for D Jett Woo.
Woo was once regarded as a top-end prospect coming out of junior. The former Moose Jaw Warrior and Calgary Hitman was taken by the Canucks in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft.
However, things haven’t quite panned out for the Winnipeg native, at least in terms of making it to the big time. While he played five-plus seasons with the Canucks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks, Woo has yet to make his NHL debut. He has had some frutiful seasons with the Abby Canucks, including a 31-point season during the 2023-24 campaign and helping his team win the franchise’s first Calder Cup last spring.
So far this season, the 25-year-old has scored a goal and seven assists for eight points in 26 games. In 293 career regular-season games in the AHL, Woo has scored 22 goals and 91 points, with another six points in 30 playoff games.
Woo is on a one-year, two-way contract with an NHL cap hit of $775,000.
Thompson has played a handful of NHL games in recent memory. The Courtice, Ont. native made his debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team that took him in the third round of the 2020 draft, during the 2023-24 season. Thompson was traded to San Jose before the deadline that year as part of the deal that brought Anthony Duclair to Tampa.
Thompson appeared in 31 games during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring four goals and six assists for 10 points. He has spent all of this season with the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ primary affiliate, scoring three goals and 12 points in 42 games.
Thompson has potted 10 points in 34 NHL games. In 203 AHL contests, the 23-year-old has scored 20 goals and 91 points, with another two points in 11 postseason games.
Thompson is also on a one-year, two-way deal, which has an NHL cap hit of $800,00.
