Former Wrexham star Ben Tozer just loved playing in the FA Cup

The 36-year-old, who was club captain and a back-to-back promotion winner during his time at The Racecourse, holds the record of playing in 14 games in the competition during Parkinson’s reign. Paul Mullin is next on the list with 13 starts.

Since making his Swindon debut 19 years ago, Tozer played for a host of clubs before hanging up his boots last summer and the FA Cup always had a special place in his heart.

“It’s a nice distraction,” said Tozer. “The FA Cup is probably the best cup competition in the world in my opinion.

“I’ll never forget my first FA Cup game, for Swindon against Wycombe, thinking it was mental playing in the Cup.

“I would love to know how many games I’ve played in total in the Cup. It must be a heck of a lot, something like 40-plus.

“When people go on about cup draws and say ‘big one away’, I always wanted a home tie just to get through and see how far you could get.

“I always thought you were better off saying you’d played in the quarter-finals of the Cup as opposed to saying you’d played Chelsea away.

“I was quite lucky with some of the ties I was involved in, like Tottenham when I was at Newport and Manchester City with Cheltenham.”

Tozer was in the Wrexham side which caused a huge shock by winning 4-3 at Championship high-fliers Coventry City in the third round when the Reds were challenging for the National League title in the 2022-23 season.

The Reds drew 3-3 with Premier League bound Sheffield Unitedin the next round at The Racecourse, with Parkinson’s men leading before the Blades scored a late equaliser to take the tie to a replay where they triumphed 3-1.

Tozer will never forget that first meeting with United.

“The Sheffield United game is the one that sticks out most for me,” he said.

“It was an incredible atmosphere at The Racecourse.

“People that weren’t involved in the game but on the bench or not playing said it was the loudest they’d heard a stadium.

“It was phenomenal.”

Wrexham have progressed to the fifth round for the first time under Parkinson with Premier League giants Chelsea the opponents at The Racecourse on Saturday.

The Reds beat top-flight strugglers Nottingham Forest at home in round three and Tozer believes there could be another shock.

“There’s always the potential of an upset and I don’t see why they can’t do it, especially with the fans behind them,” he said.

“It’s almost seems like the fans go up a notch in FA Cup games. You seen that with the Nottingham Forest game.”

Tozer was present for the 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town in the fourth round which set up the clash with Chelsea.

It was the 11th time he has been a TV pundit for a Wrexham game but first his former club had won with him on the microphone and he’s relieved to put that to bed.

“I didn’t know if anyone knew it, I never said anything in or around the club!” he added.

“You know when the fans get wind of something like that, they actually start believing it.

“It was eating me alive and dads on the school run were saying after every one, ‘they’ll get you cancelled off air soon if you don’t get a win’.”
