Capitals acquire D Liljegren from Sharks

The Washington Capitals are acquiring defenceman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

Liljegren, 26, has a goal and 11 points in 43 games with the Sharks this season while averaging 20:08 of ice time.

The 6-foot-1, right-shot defenceman is on the final season of a two-year, $6 million contract that carries a cap hit of $3 million. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Drafted 17th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2017, Liljegren has 21 goals and 93 points in 307 career games split between the Maple Leafs and Sharks.

The Kristianstad, Sweden native represented his country at the 2023 World Hockey Championship in a sixth-place finish.
