Alan Titchmarsh and his wife Alison face “so many challenges” while their house sale is in turmoil. The former Gardeners’ World presenter recently slashed £450,000 from the asking price of his Hampshire home.

The couple want to sell the Grade II-listed property after moving to Surrey to be closer to their two daughters. The five-bedroom home in Holybourne was originally listed in September for just under £4 million.

But despite much publicity surrounding the potential sale, it is yet to attract a bidder. Writing in Gardeners’ World, Alan said it was a “wrench” to leave the Hampshire property but admitted it was “time to downsize”.

His new home also comes with a new garden, a one-and-a-half acre plot. Alan says he is “keen to get cracking” in his new plot having moved in December.

He explains the garden woodland is “overgrown and overshadowed” and that “many of the rhododendrons have turned into trees”. Alan however will have to wait until spring to find out how much of his garden will grow.

Writing in Gardeners’ World he admits that some plants and shrubs will need to be “cut back” while some will have to be “selectively culled”. Alan however says he will learn in April, May and June which of his new plants have potential to flower still.

He however is still left wondering when he should “crack on” and what he should leave alone. Luckily, Alan says he has found some tasks he can get on with as he waits for the warmer weather.

He has found himself making new beds around the rear of his property. Alan says this is something he has found “joy” in as he adopts to his new soil, having spent four decades working in chalk.

He wrote: “New gardens possess so many challenges. I am monitoring the path of the sun — at its lowest at this time of year — so that plants which require sun or shade can be catered for.

“I have found the best place for a greenhouse and acquired the planning permission I need in this conservation area. (Living in terrain that is designated a National Landscape has to be a plus, but it brings with it a number of planning restrictions, which I know are in everybody’s interests).”

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh returns to screens from 9.30am this morning (March 8).

Alan will be joined by wildlife presenter Michaela Strachan and Call the Midwife stars Annabelle Apsion and Cliff Parisi.

Elsewhere he will be speaking to a couple who have spent more than five years setting up a hedgehog hospital in their garden. Alan has presented the popular Sunday morning magazine show for almost six years now.
