British actor Luke Newton discussed returning to “Bridgerton” for its fourth season on Netflix. He plays the role of Colin Bridgerton.

The synopsis is: In a new tale from the ton, eternal bachelor Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) finally meets his match: a captivating lady’s maid in disguise at a masquerade ball.

Newton on being back in ‘Bridgerton’ this season

On being back in the “Bridgerton” fold this season, he said, “It was amazing to come back this season, particularly after the whirlwind of Season 3 that both Nicola and I went through — not only shooting the show but then touring and promoting it.”

“It was a really special moment to feel like we were coming back home and getting to explore this new version of their story and their relationship,” he added.

Playing a new version of Colin

On playing a new version of Colin, Newton said, “It was nice for the focus to shift, and to play this new version of Colin and Penelope. Last season, there weren’t many moments where we could just sit and be happy.”

“There was always some drama around the corner, whereas this season it’s nice to sit in that and enjoy a moment of peace,” he added.

Newton on Yerin Ha joining the cast this season

On having Yerin Ha a part of the “Bridgerton” cast this season, Newton said, “It’s a real testament to the casting team. I’ve said it from day one: Everyone we welcome into the show completely fits in and feels part of the family immediately, and it was the same with Yerin.”

“It was so nice to see her hit the ground running with this role. You’re straight into full shoot days, and for me to be able to take a little step back and see Yerin and Luke blossom this romance was such a cool experience,” he elaborated.

“Yerin is great, a true professional, and I loved seeing her do her thing,” he added.

Newton on the most exciting part of telling this new love story

On the most exciting part of telling this new love story, Newton responded, “The most exciting part I found from this season is having the upstairs-downstairs element to the show. We’ve not really explored that.”

“I love that it’s characters we’ve seen in previous seasons, but now they come to the forefront of the story. We really get to see their backstory and everything that’s going on with their characters,” he elaborated.

“We’ve never seen that within this world,” he admitted. “It has existed within period dramas before, but it’s really cool that there are these characters people may have seen onscreen in previous seasons, and now we get to dig deep into their story.”

“Just to see another side of Bridgerton House, even — it’s a part of the house that I never would’ve explored or even known was there,” he added.

Newton on where his character was at the end of Season 3

On where his character was at the end of Season 3, he said, “At the end of Season 3, Colin and Penelope have had their first child. They’re in newlywed bliss. The house is full of people and the aunties and the cousins of our son. It’s a really positive time for them, but also a real time of change, becoming parents.”

“So, it was really exciting to dive into Season 4 knowing that we were starting from a place of contentment,” he noted.

On where the show picks up with Colin in Season 4, Newton said, “At the start of Season 4, we find Colin and Penelope completely in love to the point that they’re almost smug about it.”

“They’re completely obsessed with each other, particularly Colin. He’s got this obsession with never wanting anyone or anything else,” he added.

Newton on filming the masquerade ball

On filming the masquerade ball, Newton said, “It’s really important to the fans. It’s a moment that they’ve loved from the books. I knew it was going to be one of those iconic moments that people will later look back on.”

“I was excited to see everyone’s costumes and what the set design was going to look like. It’s even more flamboyant than we’ve seen previously, and there’s an element of fun to it as well,” he elaborated.

“Some of the costumes aren’t necessarily what you would think people would have in the Regency era at a masquerade ball,” he observed.

“I was blown away walking on set for the first time, as I always am, to be honest. Most people were masked when we arrived on set,” he admitted.

“There was a moment where you discovered who that person was as they revealed their mask, which was surreal because it really felt like we were in the scene,” he said.

“Even in the green room or whilst we were waiting to travel to set, I didn’t know who some people were — especially people who had new wigs, fully masked. It was actually a really fun day, figuring out what everyone was doing and what they were wearing,” he explained.

Newton on his costume in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4

On his costume, Newton said, “I remember having a conversation with Jess, our showrunner, early on, and she told me that Colin was going to go as a pirate — and it came from the fans, which is a really cool moment.”

“The fans coined him ‘sexy pirate’ in Season 3, and I feel weird even saying that about myself, but we’re talking about a character here, as Colin,” he noted.

“Knowing the history of Colin’s travels and the people he would’ve come across, for him to go full pirate was really fun to play,” he added.
